New York City Cosmetic and General Dentistry, headed up by Dentist to the Stars Dr. Catrise Austin, is helping the public understand how to select a dental insurance plan during open enrollment.

New York City Cosmetic and General Dentistry wants the public to understand how to select a dental insurance plan, especially during November when most companies host open enrollments. Dr. Austin of New York City Cosmetic and General Dentistry is sharing tips, within this media release, on the best ways to find the most appropriate dental insurance coverage- which many consumers find to be a confusing process. In addition, people who don’t have dental insurance will discover free tips on obtaining dental services too!

“Choosing a dentist during open enrollment season, or just dental insurance, can be daunting. I wanted to provide free tips to help people make the best choice for their dental needs and a choice that made the most sound financial sense,” said Dr. Catrise Austin. “There are three important benefit levels related to you dental needs to look at when comparing dental insurance plans. Preventive care (exams, x-rays, basic cleanings), routine or basic care (fillings, tooth extractions, root canals, deep cleanings), and complex or major care services (crowns, dental implants, and dentures). Basic and Major (Complex) care benefit levels are very important in adult (older) individuals because when these services are needed, expenses can add up very quickly and you can easily max out of benefits. ”

According to the American Dental Association, “The cost of dentistry is what keeps more than half of consumers away from the dentist for years at a time.” But, Dr. Austin says even without dental insurance, most dental related costs are predictable and can be planned for. “Routine check-ups, X-rays, and basic teeth cleanings (preventive care) are generally covered at 100% which certainly meets the financial needs of most people in this economy. Emergencies and major dental services cause the most financial concern for people, which is why selecting the right dental insurance is imperative.”
Dr. Austin, of New York City Cosmetic and General Dentistry, also says knowing the difference between a HMO (managed-care plan) and a PPO (freedom-of-choice) dental plan can save a consumer money. “Managed-care plans are the most popular for employers because they are cost effective. These HMO plans require patients to choose from a pre-approved list of dentists in a network of providers, but comes with lots of plan limitations. When you select a dentist during open enrollment, if you are not happy you can’t switch until the next enrollment period a year later. These restrictions do not apply for PPO or freedom plans” said Dr. Austin. “It is impossible to really know how good, or how bad, a dentist is just by looking at an alphabetic list of providers. Also, when considering a managed- care plan please understand the amount taken from your paycheck will be less than a freedom-of-choice dental plan. But, this savings will catch-up to a person because their deductible and out-of-pocket expense at the doctor’s office is usually higher.”
