On October 31, city bike manufacturer Linus Bike responds to an article from blogdowntown.com, announcing that the League of American Bicyclists had named Los Angeles an official “Bike-Friendly Community” (BFC).
According to article author Hayley Fox, “The more than 100-year-old bike league which advocates for cycling throughout the country, now has a list of 242 BFCs throughout the U.S.”Fox goes on to explain, “Los Angeles, along with Nashville, Tennessee and Miami, Florida, are three of the most recent cities to be added to the list. The league said L.A.’s multitude of cycling and advocacy organizations, from the Bicycle Kitchen to the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, are key components of the movement's success.” The 2012 Bicycle Master Plan put in place by Mayor Villaraigosa, which allowed for more city bike paths, also contributed to L.A’s induction onto the list of BFCs, reports blogdowntown.com.
Fox additionally quoted a statement from Villaraigosa, who stated, “From building 1,600 miles of bikeways over the next 30 years to increasing the number of bike racks in the city by 80 percent, we're making it simpler and safer for Angelenos to get around on two wheels.”
China Reevers, a representative of city bike manufacturer Linus Bike, applauds Los Angeles, stating, “We’re extremely happy to see major cities turning themselves into communities that are cyclist friendly. Cycling is not only good for the environment and for personal health, but it creates a sense of community when everything is also done to ensure that cyclists are safe and can share the roads without worry. The efforts of the city of Los Angeles to keep their cycling citizens safe is nothing short of inspiring.”
