A go-getting student from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) has teamed up with a seasoned software engineer to build a disruptive digital health company called Euddle. Farai Sikipa, currently taking time off from his studies at UNC, has made major strides towards transforming his big idea into a bold reality, including the recruitment of a leading technologist.
Despite being a first time entrepreneur, Sikipa claimed he made it difficult for his highly successful co-founder to refuse an opportunity to be a part of the venture.
“I don’t take no for an answer; he had little choice but to join me,” Sikipa said with a smile. “On a serious note, it’s imperative for the long-term success of the company that we identify and go after the best talent out there. I worked very hard to get him on board, and he is the first of many world-class recruits that we intend to bring in.”
The company’s name, Euddle, is derived from the term eudaemonia; an Aristotelian concept that the goal of life is happiness and it is achieved through reaching one's full potential. As stated on its website, Euddle aims “to make the world a happier place by giving people the means to better manage their health and lifestyle choices.” Sikipa, who’s first name (Farai) means be happy in his Zimbabwean mother tongue, explained that people will use Euddle to keep up with the latest health and lifestyle stories, ideas, opinions, news and trends, to find healthy apps, videos, events, classes, recipes, deals and more, and to discover what is wrong, why and if and where to go for medical treatment.
“We’ve built this company on the belief that there needs to be an easy and engaging way for people to manage their well-being. Yes, we’re seeing a lot of progress being made in the digital health space, but there’s still a gap in the sense that there‘s no market leader that consumers rely on for all or even most of their needs.” Sikipa insisted that the company is not looking to displace any others in its industry. “Our mission is not to wipe anyone off the map, but merely to make the world a better place by providing a health and lifestyle management experience that everyone wants to be a part of. We’re not going anywhere until we feel that the mission is complete; that you can count on.”
At 22, Sikipa feels he has had to work hard to get people to look beyond his age and judge him on his merits alone.
“Look, I may be young but I’m certainly not naïve enough to think that what we’re doing is going to come easy. Goals are achieved through enormous amounts of hard work - not age - and I think it’s a shame that a lot of people don’t realize that. Our mission may sound big but it certainly starts small – with the lifestyle choices people make on a daily basis. The little things.” The little things are exactly what inspired the company’s latest commercial, for which Sikipa performed the voiceover. “These choices are what shape people’s well-being, and we are building tools to help people choose better. People caring about the manner in which they live creates a healthier being, and leads to a better understanding of what it takes to be happy. We believe that this makes for a better world.”
Recently Forbes released an article, Big Changes Coming to Health Care and Education, suggesting that the next major players in the digital health/social media scene “will make billions” (http://www.forbes.com/sites/richkarlgaard/2012/06/27/big-changes-coming-to-health-care-and-education). Euddle has already secured several key partnerships and while he acknowledges that the company is positioning itself well for future success, Sikipa maintains that it’s not about fame or fortune but achieving something meaningful in his lifetime.
“My work is a very large part of my world; my family and friends will be the first to tell you that. I love what I do mainly because I know that it’s going to make a difference in people’s lives and that’s what’s most important to me – doing something that will leave a mark. I’ve been working sleepless nights and early mornings without pay for the past year, as I made the decision very early on that our primary focus would be on building a product that will change the world. With the exception of the past month or so, we’ve been trying to progress as quietly as possibly and I feel that has worked to our advantage. In fact, during the summer we started getting some unwanted notice so I built a very basic prototype and promoted it to the public to diverge the attention from what we were really doing."
Euddle is under the radar for now, but it may only be a matter of time until that changes.
“I can assure everyone that we’re going to do our due diligence to provide people with the best tools to manage their well-being. I feel very strongly that our launch will mark the beginning of a new era in health, happiness and technology,” Sikipa added.
