The Oklahoma bankruptcy lawyers at the law firm of Atkins & Markoff, a team of attorneys who represent consumers and businesses that are experiencing extreme financial difficulties, hereby alerts the public of the results of a new study that was published recently that reviewed the number of people who are graduating from college with student loan debt. The study also reviewed the average amount of the debt that’s owed by graduates in this position.

Specifically, the study was completed by the Institute for College Access and Success, which is an independent and non-profit organization based on Washington, D.C. The study was entitled, “Student Debt and the Class of 2011” and it was meant to provide tangible numerical information regarding the nature of student loan debt that graduates face when they leave school and attempt to enter the American workforce.

The study found that approximately two-thirds of all college graduates finish their Bachelor’s degrees with some form of student loan debt. In addition, every student who owes student loan debt has borrowed approximately $26,600. In Oklahoma, the average amount of debt owed by a college graduate when he or she finishes school is $20,897. All of this debt contributes to the more than $1 trillion in student loan debt that’s owed in the United States, a number that has surpassed credit card debt for the first time in American history.

Unfortunately, student loan debt cannot be discharged in bankruptcy cases outside of relatively rare circumstances. However, the Oklahoma bankruptcy lawyers at Atkins & Markoff encourage anyone who is struggling with student loan debt to seek the advice of an experienced professional who can review their overall financial picture and recommend a strategy to follow for relief.
