My stories, just like real life, are filled with people who are trying to understand themselves, their values and how to make it ‘work’ with someone else.

Austin romance author Ruthie Robinson has released the fifth book in her “More than Skin” series. When You Fall… is set in the outskirts of Austin and chronicles the relationship between Carter Nicole Woodson, a wedding-crashing, frustrated African-American accountant who longs to return to the simpler days of growing up on her grandfather’s ranch, and Rafael Antonio Garcia, a third-generation Latino American who is pursuing the dream—against his family’s wishes—of becoming an organic farmer.
The two meet during a rather unconventional encounter when Carter thinks she is being accosted in her grandfather’s house by Rafael, who mistakes her for an intruder in the empty homestead which he is watching as a favor to the undependable property manager. Chaos ensues, and the two embark on an adventure that ultimately leads to true love.
“I’ve always been a matchmaker at heart,” says Robinson, “so I pair people together within the pages of my books who normally don’t ‘fit’ together, at least the way we tend to view others through our visual barometers. But we are so much more than our skin, and that’s what I try to convey.”
Robinson’s series highlight the uniqueness of Austin, Central Texas, and the individuals who call the region home. Her characters embody the best of all ethnicities, and she crafts stories that intertwine different races, exploring their customs and the challenges they face in building relationships, all in settings that reflect the very best of the Lone Star state.
This accountant-turned-author has traveled an unconventional path to writing, turning a hobby into an award-winning first book. Sister2Sister and Genesis Press, the largest privately-owned African- American book publisher, were seeking aspiring, unpublished romance writers who wanted a chance to jump-start their publishing career. Ironically, she had just finished her first original manuscript, Reye’s Gold. Robinson decided, on a whim, to enter the manuscript contest. Her submission won, and Reye’s Gold was released in November 2010. Robinson’s series have introduced characters that are easy to relate to, and readers have the opportunity to revisit with favorite ones throughout the series.
“My stories, just like real life, are filled with people who are trying to understand themselves, their values and how to make it ‘work’ with someone else,” Robinson says. “I enjoy sharing my characters with readers as much as I hope they enjoy visiting with them.”
