Those who are in the path of this storm should evacuate if at all possible
Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) October 30, 2012
Restoration Local, one of the leading providers of water and hurricane damage restoration in the United States, is offering recommendations to residents who may be located in the path of Hurricane Sandy, which is scheduled to make landfall either late Monday night or early Tuesday.
Forecasters predict that Sandy could cause problems for up to 60 million Americans across the northeastern US as she merges with two cold fronts to become what is commonly referred to as a perfect storm.
Those who are in the path of this storm should evacuate if at all possible. If not, there are certain steps involved in riding out such a worst case scenario. Residents are advised to monitor local TV and radio to remain updated on alerts and constantly changing weather conditions. The home should be secured with storm shutters and all loose exterior objects brought indoors.
Utilities should be shut off at the source, along with propane tanks. Phones should not be used except in emergencies. Boats should ideally be placed in storage at best, and moored down tightly if storage is not an option.
Make sure there is a supply of water available. Fill the bathtub, sink and other containers with as much fresh and clean water as possible. If the power goes out refrain from opening the refrigerator door as much as possible, as this will help the food inside remain fresh that much longer.
Mobile homes are particularly susceptible to hurricane force winds. Seek more secure shelter. High rise buildings are similarly dangerous in strong wind conditions. Those living on floodplains or island waterways should move inland immediately.
Once the hurricane has moved in, remain indoors and away from windows and glass doors. Close all interior doors and secure and brace the external doors. Curtains and blinds should remain closed to protect against flying glass if a window should break.
Take refuge in a small interior room, closet or hallway on the lowest level of the home, or remain on the floor under a sturdy object.
Restoration Local is one of the leading providers of hurricane damage repair and restoration in the country, with providers in 30 states and more being added every month. They are available 24/7 and all work is guaranteed.
