Diamond Antenna Europe will provide production, customer service and sales to designated European markets. Diamond Antenna and Microwave will supply design and engineering support to AML Microtechnique for the production of microwave rotary joints in Metz, France which will be sold under the Diamond Antenna Europe label. Diamond-Roltran will supply Roll-Ring® units to AML Microtechnique for incorporation into AML Microtechnique rotary joints built for Diamond Antenna Europe.
Diamond Antenna and Microwave has fielded Primary and Secondary ATC Radar Rotary Joints with Roll-Rings® globally since 2001 for civilian and military fixed and mobile systems. While many configurations are possible the Diamond Series 2620 Primary and Secondary ATC Radar Rotary Joint is a standard. The 2620 is comprised of six channels with one WR-284 Waveguide, 2 S-Band and 3 Mode S compliant L-Band coaxial channels as well as a 24 Channel Roll-Ring® and provisions for two encoders. The coaxial channels use standard capacitively coupled, non-contacting rings plus Diamond’s patented flexible journal/compressive choke package design which affords better isolation across the entire band of interest as well as lower insertion loss and a smaller size.
Engineers from both AML and Diamond are transitioning the proven 2620 design to Metz, France to be able to produce the rotary joint entirely in Europe in 2013. As opportunities arise Diamond Antenna Europe will interact with European customers on their requirements and Diamond Antenna and Microwave will work with AML Microtechnique to create designs for European customers which will then be built in Europe. With the new arrangement AML will have access to Roll-Rings® for its Diamond rotary joints manufactured in France for the European market.
Roll-Rings® are a maintenance free alternative to slip rings. Instead of a wearing contact like slip-rings Roll-Rings® utilize a rolling contact which operates with virtually no wear. The gold plated spring copper Roll-Rings® roll slightly compressed between two conductive races in such a way that they maintain contact in the most demanding shock and vibration applications yet do not develop cyclical fatigue enabling operation to 1 billion revolutions and beyond. It is this maintenance free benefit that has attracted air traffic control rotary joint customers to the Roll-Ring® solution as it provides significantly longer operating periods without interruption and no maintenance costs.
