Both residents and staff at Back2Basics alcohol and drug rehabilitation center make the necessary preparations for the cultural immersion outdoor adventure to Ixtapa, Mexico in November. For the first time residents will encounter a new culture, language barrier, Spanish language classes, surf lessons and outdoor adventures, all in a different country.
Current Back2Basics intern and former resident Anthony Rutt recalls the physical and mental benefits of the trip. “For me, [Mexico] was opportunity to really think about who I was and what I wanted to do, without the influence of drugs or alcohol clouding my thought process,” said Rutt.
Weekly outdoor adventures within the program are schedule to the minute. The cultural immersion trip is a more relaxed setting that encourages the more advanced residents in the program to “live local.”
Residents are pairing surfing and local culinary with sobriety, 12-Step meetings and the Spanish Language. “The itinerary consists of surfing in the morning, stop at a traditional spot for Mexican food, rest and go to a 12-Step meeting or Spanish. Also, there will be time set aside for community service, and every night we experience a different place for a fantastic dinner,” said Back2Basics Co-founder Graciela Del Moral.
Learning how to combine sobriety and a new environment is the lesson learned by the residents. “A total spiritual experience occurs with the residents -- overcoming fears and observing how locals enjoy life with fewer resources, and then the feeling of gratitude and humility after conquering all of that,” said Del Moral.
Back2Basics will be packing their bags from Nov. 19 – Dec. 3.
