Athletic Orthopedics and Knee Center, a leading orthopedic medical clinic of Houston, is proud to announce that they have an orthopedic specialist on staff that performs the latest hip arthroscopy procedure to treat femoroacetabular impingement in patients.
Dr. Geyer joined Athletic Orthopedics & Knee Center this past August. He is an orthopedic surgeon with a focus on treating injuries of the knee, hip and shoulder. He received his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine, did his residency at Duke University Medical Center and recently completed his fellowship at The Steadman Clinic Sports Medicine Fellowship in Vail, CO.
It was at The Steadman Clinic that Dr. Geyer studied under Dr. Philippon, one of the world’s leading orthopedic hip arthoscopists and pioneers in this emerging field within orthopedics. Dr. Geyer is one of the few doctors in Houston that can perform hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement.
“I’m excited to bring hip arthroscopy and the treatment of hip pain in athletes to Athletic Orthopedics and Knee Center (AOKC). Through this minimally invasive approach, I can treat a number of sources of pain within the hip,” said Dr. Mark Geyer, Orthopedic Surgeon
Femoroacetabular impingement is common in athletes such as football, soccer, tennis and hockey players. Patients usually complain about pain in their groin, buttocks or hip. The labral tissue tears and the hip becomes inflamed from friction of the bones in the hip socket causing the patient much discomfort.
Hip arthroscopy is typically reserved for patients when other treatments like physical therapy, injections and anti-inflammatory medication have not decreased the discomfort and allowed these athletes to return to their full activity. During the surgery, Dr. Geyer focuses on recontouring the femoral bone so it glides in the hip socket better, preventing the labral tissue from being pinched and repairing the labrum. Typical recovery time for a patient would be about four months.
