A recent report from the Texas Lawyer’s New Associates Survey shows that there were 250 new associates who started working fulltime this fall at 18 of the 25 largest law firms in Texas. This is an increase of 12.1 percent compared to the previous year’s number when considering the same law firms. This year is also the first time that the first-year associate class was bigger than the previous year’s class since 2008. Legal job research site, LawCrossing.com has also seen more attorney positions open up in Texas and currently lists 1,063 Texas law jobs.

The Texas Lawyer also reports that Houston-based Looper Reed & McGraw and Dallas-based Winstead, both major Texas firms, have increased their base annual salaries for their first-year associates.

Looper Reed & McGraw increased it by $10,000 to $120,000 and Winstead increased it by $18,000 to $160,000. Recently, Dallas-based law firm Bickel & Brewer shook up the legal hiring market by offering its 2013 first-year associates a base annual salary of $185,000.

LawCrossing.com CEO Harrison Barnes sees this as the resilience of the legal market of Texas. “The fact that there are firms in Texas increasing their base salaries for first-year associates shows that the industry is certainly doing better than other states.” LawCrossing.com has been able to find 15,000 attorney jobs nationwide as of October 30.

The other major firms in the state that have increased their first-year associates are: Dallas-based Thompson & Knight and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, and Houston-based Vinson & Elkins. Vinson & Elkins has the biggest new class of lawyers with 59 new associates.
