Haag-Streit International has announced a revision to the ‘Instructions for Disinfection of Measuring Prisms’ for the cleaning, disinfection, rinsing, drying and storage of tonometer measuring prisms. As well as these important amendments to the procedure, Haag-Streit has also amended the list of suitable disinfectants which should be used for cleaning the prisms in between each use.

A strict disinfection protocol for reusable tonometer prisms is necessary to ensure that the risk of any cross-infection between patients is minimised. To save time and avoid a lengthy sterilisation process, I would always recommend the use of Tonosafe.

The purpose of the newly published disinfectant list is to give clinicians, who use Goldmann tonometry prisms, a choice of suitable disinfectants which may be used to validate that their own disinfection process is accurate.

The revisions made to the ‘Instructions for Disinfection of Measuring Prisms’ for the cleaning, rinsing, drying, disinfection and storage of tonometer measuring prisms include some key new improvements. They now recommend the use of disposable gloves to help avoid the risk of transmitting diseases. They also recommend the use of a Desinset plastic tray to ensure a safe cleaning process.

Haag-Streit recommends that single-use products and other accessories are the safest method to avoid the transmission of any diseases. Tonosafe are single-use tonometer prisms which eliminate the need for disinfection between patients. Calibrated to Goldmann standards, the prisms are just as accurate and are supplied fully-sterilised, so avoid the need for timely and potentially damaging disinfection and sterilisation processes.

Sam Laidlaw, Product Manager for HS-UK, said, “A strict disinfection protocol for reusable tonometer prisms is necessary to ensure that the risk of any cross-infection between patients is minimised. To save time and avoid a lengthy sterilisation process, I would always recommend the use of Tonosafe.”
