Two years ago, The Children’s Museum of Richmond, located in Richmond, VA, was the first children’s museum in the country to open a satellite branch. A short two years later, it is now the first to open a second, even larger branch.

“We did quite a bit of market research and learned that we had 98% brand awareness and everybody loved what we offered, but they only visited the museum a few times a year because it wasn’t in close proximity to their homes,” says Rosman.

When researching the custom-themed, indoor play areas and types of experiences they wanted to offer children at the newest location, Rosman says the museum’s architects contacted PLAYTIME, LLC.

“We really liked the interactivity and soft nature of PLAYTIME’s commercial playground equipment,” she says. “We wanted to make sure the very young children had things to crawl on and walk on while staying safe when they fall.”

The new museum indoor play area includes an “Enchanted Forest” theme, complete with a tree, turtle and flowers.

“People love it,” says Rosman. “It just looks sweet and innocent, like something that you want a baby to play in.”

Rosman adds that the museum staff loves the equipment, as well.

“When those elements arrived, we were really thrilled with the quality. They look like they’ll last 10 to 15 years even though they’re being crawled on all the time. And the softness and certified antibacterial finishes are so appealing to us.”

The newest location also includes a full-size fire truck and city bus; a “Main Street” where children can imagine themselves as bakers, grocers, shoppers and diners; a vet clinic where they can look at X-rays and perform make-believe operations; an area called “Under the Sea,” complete with a two-story climber; a train ride; a sand digging pit; a bait and tackle shop, and even a kitten room with live kittens that can be adopted, sponsored by the SPCA.

Rosman states, “By opening the satellites, we opened up new markets where people have more resources and it actually supports the mission of the museum, enabling us to provide more scholarships to underserved populations. It’s been pretty incredible.”
