Cape Ann Fine Arts is pleased to announce the acquisition of a 1915 oil on canvas Elizabeth Wentworth Roberts (1871-1927). The piece was just acquired from a private collector in western Massachusetts and is now available for sale to those with a keen eye for the rare and exceptional. Elizabeth Roberts' paintings have brought over $44,000 at auction, but these works almost never surface.

Elizabeth Wentworth Roberts was known mostly for her landscape and seascape paintings. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where she won the Mary Smith Prize in 1889. After that time she moved to France to study under the renowned Jules Lefebvre, and she remained in France for the following 10 years perfecting her craft. After her return to the United States, she founded the Concord Art Association in 1916 along with several colleagues, where masterpieces from John Singer Sargent, Claude Monet, Robert Henri and Mary Cassatt were displayed. The works of Elizabeth Wentworth Roberts are exceedingly rare as she suffered from a great deal of depression which ultimately lead to her untimely death at the age of 56, from suicide when she was told she must stop painting.

The Cape Ann region of Massachusetts is home to the oldest art colony in America, the Rocky Neck Art Colony . Artists including including Milton Avery, Nell Blaine, Stuart Davis, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, and John Sloan have all painted in this picturesque area of Gloucester Massachusetts.
