Matha Ayurveda Eye Hospital in Kerala has succeeded in developing a successful line of treatment for progressive myopia. This new treatment method helps to improve vision and to keep away from complications.
Progressive myopia is a clinical condition which manifests its first symptom as short sightedness. Gradually, as the disease progresses, the patient experiences floaters and flashes in the eye, dryness of the eye, eye strain and headache. Later, the patient surprisingly realizes that his / her vision is not further improving with the help of lenses. The reason is that the retina is involved in the pathology along with the refractive media and the layers of the eye ball. The present treatments – contact lens, laser, surgery etc are not giving a promised result in this stage. It is from this experience, the doctors of Matha Ayurveda Eye Hospital, Kerala started research works on progressive myopia strictly on the basis of ayurvedic principles. It has succeeded in developing a new line of treatment which is helpful in improving vision and preventing complications.
Dr. P K Santhakumari, the mentor and chief physician of Matha Ayurveda eye hospitals from her 30 years clinical experience in ayurvedic ophthalmology says that according to ayurvedic theories, progressive myopia is having the predominance of ‘Vata’ and ‘Pitta’ factors in its pathology and this in turn leads to a degenerative phase. So, the treatment should be capable of controlling ‘Vata’ and ‘Pitta’ and also rejuvenating and strengthening the structures of the eye, especially the retina.
The research works on this basis has resulted in developing a successful line of treatment. Hundreds of young adults have already benefitted from this treatment. Mr. Arunjith Puthussery, the executive director of Matha Ayurveda Eye Hospitals announced the implementation of this treatment procedure successfully at both the hospitals in Trivandrum (Thachottukavu and Kudappanakunnu), Kerala, India.
Matha Ayurveda Eye Hospital is working with dedication on various aspects of Ayurvedic ophthalmology. The hospital had launched an “Ayurvedic Eye Care Program for Children” in 2008 on its fifth anniversary. “A Textbook of Ophthalmology in Ayurveda” is an authentic textbook published by Matha Ayurveda Eye Hospital for students and teachers of ayurvedic ophthalmology written by its chief physician and mentor, Dr P K Santhakumari. A residency program and fellowship program with practical training for ayurvedic doctors on Ayurvedic Ophthalmology is another fruitful activity of this hospital.
