New research out of Coventry University suggests that texting could have positive effects on the literacy and spelling skills of children. While critics have been concerned that abbreviations in texting could negatively affect the skills of children and confuse them as to the proper spelling of words, the opposite has been found to be true.
“This latest research is very interesting,” announces Marc Slater of Ultimate Spelling Software. “For texting to help kids spell, it sounds great. We just hope that research continues to support these findings as texting seems to be more and more a part of everyday life.”
In comparing two groups of children over a ten-week period, research showed that students who were able to text improved their spelling development more than those who did not have access to cellphones. Researchers feel that this can be attributed to the relationship between words and abbreviations and greater exposure to reading opportunities beyond the school environment.
“Perhaps these findings are simply showing us another alternative for learning,” adds Mr. Slater. “Obviously, the more opportunities a child has to practice his or her reading and spelling skills, the better they will be. It only makes sense; however, we are not completely convinced quite yet that a continued emphasis on spelling skills rather than 'text-speak' should be dropped from any school's curriculum.”
While critics have been concerned that abbreviations, slang, and other words used during texting will wind up in school essays and negatively impact learning, at this point, it has not been found to be true. Researchers are therefore optimistic that future studies will continue to support their findings and texting will become an asset and an integral part to learning. “Additional resources that promote spelling skills are always welcomed,” adds Mr. Slater.
