On October 2nd, the organic farmers market community Colle commends an article published by Voice of America which suggests that organic farming could be a solution to hunger in Africa.
The Voice of America article reads, “Since the global food crisis several years ago, greater investment is being made in smallholder farms. Most of the farms in sub-Saharan Africa are smallholder, consisting of about one or two hectares. One of the goals is to boost yields without necessarily clearing more land to grow additional crops.” The article refers to John Reganold, a soil scientist who explains that using a system called perenniation, in which perennials are planted along with food crops, could help feed hungry families and keep the soil fruitful. According to Reganold, “This system that we call perenniation is one of those systems where you actually plant perennials and it increases both food security and it builds the soil at the same time.”
The farmland’s poor soil, Voice of America reports, may be a result of years of weathering and without improvement it cannot provide crops with proper nourishment. Colle, the first online database dedicated to connecting organic farmers and natural product vendors with consumers, commends Voice of America. Colle believes organic farming provides communities with the healthiest most nutritious products, and through this perenniation system the organic products supplied will make an incredible difference for the well being of starving African families.
Voice of America expresses that perenniation is becoming popular among countries such as Zambia, Niger and Malawi and also explains that this system has additional benefits, stating, “Besides planting trees, the perenniation also calls for the use of the doubled-up and the push-pull systems. The doubled-up system has farmers mixing pigeon pea plants among soybean and maize crops. Pigeon pea, a large shrub, adds nutrients to the soil, but can later be used for fuel and fodder. Some parts are edible.”
Colle is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about rational consumption and accountable conservation. The Colle movement is dedicated to connecting natural product vendors, organic farmers and all consumers who live an organic and natural lifestyle with the ultimate goal of creating more sustainable farming and consumerism.
