On October 1st, a representative for moisturizer manufacturer Likewise Skincare commented on an article published by The Huffington Post which reveals that fragrances can contribute to a skin conditions.
According to The Huffington Post, in addition to mild allergies, some people experience cases of contact dermatitis after spritzing on perfume. The article states that chemicals in certain fragrances can trigger the condition, which causes the skin to become inflamed, sore and reddened. “Aside from general irritation, contact dermatitis, which presents as inflamed skin, may also result from an allergy or irritant brought on by perfume. In more severe cases, cosmetic contact dermatitis can trigger eczema, a chronic skin disorder marked by itchy rashes,” The Huffington Post reports.
Although the majority of the population is not affected by these side effects, the article warns perfume wearers to check the chemicals in each bottle of fragrance before use. In addition, the article discloses a report compiled by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, partnered with the Environmental Working Group, which reveals that 14 possibly harmful chemicals weren’t listed on fragrance product labels according to researchers. Lisa Shariat, a representative for Likewise Skincare, states, “Dry irritated skin can look and feel terrible and serious skin conditions can be painful. Anyone suffering as a result of a reaction from a fragrance should invest in a quality moisturizer to soothe their inflamed skin.”
Certain fragrances can also bring forth allergic reactions, causing watery eyes and sneezing, the article states. Additionally, The Huffington Post reveals serious side effects, explaining “the heaviest health burden falls on the 2 percent of the population who are chemically intolerant. This heightened chemical sensitivity can be incapacitating in the most extreme cases, rendering sufferers unable to leave the house because they are so bothered by certain synthetic molecules in scents.”
