The fight to reduce the growth of cancerous cells has traditionally been combatted by use of Chemotherapy in the twentieth century. The use of Chemotherapy has often been associated with certain medical health risks, however, recent studies as well as a compelling article published on Health and Wellness portal BeWellBuzz.com have revealed new medical concerns are becoming common by using this method to treat cancerous cellular growth. And many patients and doctors are beginning to discover natural methods of treating this life-threatening disease.

Chemotherapy is defined simply as the treatment of cancer with an antineoplastic drug or with a combination of such drugs into a standardized treatment regimen. Certain chemotherapy agents also have a role in the treatment of other conditions, including ankylosing spondylitis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and scleroderma.

However, according to research conducted by the Mayo Clinic as published on their website; chemotherapy drugs cannot differentiate between healthy cells and cancer cells, and attack both with the same vigor. And according to these published reports, there are multiple health concerns for the treatment of cancer by using Chemotherapy.

“Chemotherapy side effects may include an increased risk of heart disease, especially weakening of the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy),” noted Dr. Timothy J. Moynihan an oncologist with the Mayo Clinic as posted on the Mayo Clinic Website. “Certain types of chemotherapy also increase the risk of heart attack, especially during infusion of the medication.”
Natural alternatives, such as turmeric, have shown promise in controlling and preventing cancer.

According to a media release posted on Cancer.com in May of 2012, Curcumin, the main component in the spice turmeric, suppresses a cell signaling pathway that drives the growth of head and neck cancer, according to a pilot study using human saliva by researchers at UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center in September 2011.

“This study shows that curcumin can work in the mouths of patients with head and neck malignancies and reduce activities that promote cancer growth,” Dr. Marilene Wang, a professor of head and neck surgery, Jonsson Cancer Center researcher and senior author of the study. “And it not only affected the cancer by inhibiting a critical cell signaling pathway, it also affected the saliva itself by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines within the saliva.”

Although the beginning research into discovering natural remedies for treating cancerous cell growth remains in the beginning stages, many new natural products are actively being tested by several medical professionals based on the positive results achieved by the UCLA study.
