Manchester City have started the new 2012/13 Premier League season as champions in stylish new kits which are inspired by the past but fit for the modern game.
The new Manchester City Home kit, tailored by Umbro, retains City’s iconic sky blue colour and now incorporates black detailing and trim which takes influence from the 1969 FA Cup and 1970 League Cup winning kits. The new maroon Away kit is inspired by the Umbro strip worn by City’s FA Cup winning side in 1956.
While rich in heritage, both kits have been modernised to embrace design and performance features. The Home shirt features a menswear inspired-woven collar, while the Away shirt carries a classic mitred ‘v’ neck - both necklines accentuate Umbro’s commitment to a classic, smart look.
Front panel darting has been added to both football shirts to remove excess fabric and give an athletic shaped fit, while an edge stitch has been used wherever possible to give a clean, crisp overall finish. The Home shirt has a traditional shirt cuff finish with black detail when turned out.
On the Away shirt, white stripes featured on the 1956 kit have been replaced by vertical drop-needle stitching to create a modern look. Smart saffron detail is used on the sponsor text, shorts and socks.
Both Home and Away shirts have built-in moisture management properties that wick sweat away from the body, while a shaped drop hem is utilised to provide a natural fit and tailored finish that has embodied the Manchester-based sportswear company since 1924.
The emerald green Home goalkeeper kit carries black trim and small details ensure performance and comfort are at the core of the design. Use of performance enhancing material, coupled with a soft shape hem ensures both a tailored finish and increased stretch and durability, while an articulated two piece sleeve allows for greater flexibility and protection. The Away goalkeeper strip comes in deep lavender with City’s famous sky blue home colours carried on the club crest.
White football shorts replace the sky blue of last season but the same care and attention to detail remain to maximise design and performance benefits. With dye cut venting for improved breathability, an elasticated waistband and a friction-free mesh lining the new maroon Manchester City away shorts are also a stylish and comfortable way to show your support for City.
The Home football socks pair sky blue with and sharp black detailing on the top and bottom panels of the sock. The Away maroon coloured socks feature a smart ribbed turnover and saffron stripes. Both socks have elasticated regions and mesh venting for enhanced flexibility and breathability, while cushioning for the Achilles, toe and heel offers additional protection out on the pitch.
In keeping with Umbro’s ‘football smart’ approach, walkout jackets, which players will wear when walking onto the pitch, are available in both home and away colours.
Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany said: “We take pride in our appearance as well as our performance on the pitch so it’s great to have football kits which look and feel good. We hope to deliver more success for the fans this season.”
Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart said: “I’m a fan of this new kit both in terms of look and fit. It’s a smart piece of kit and the history behind it gives us extra motivation to perform this season. The performance benefits of the kit are also really important. Feeling comfortable is essential to us and the fact that every single detail has been looked at when making this kit is a massive benefit to us.”
The Away kit is on general sale from 14th July and the home kit on 26th July.
