"Each time we’re able to stop the cycle of poverty for a low-income worker, Modest Needs lessens the burden of state and federal programs charged with the care of the truly indigent," says Dr. Keith Taylor.

Modest Needs Foundation (MN), a non-profit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of low-income working families and individuals by helping them to afford short-term emergency expenses, and Groupon Grassroots, the philanthropic arm of Groupon, today announced the launch of a national campaign to provide support towards two grants that offer assistance to low-income workers in imminent danger of eviction from or foreclosure on their homes.

Utilizing Groupon Grassroots’ collective action model, Groupon subscribers can pledge support for the Modest Needs Groupon Grassroots Campaign in increments of $10. The campaign has a ‘tipping point’ of $750.00, and contributions will be matched by the Herb Alpert Foundation up to a maximum of $90,000.00. The campaign will take place from October 4-10, 2012. According to MN, $750 – the average cost of an organizational grant – is sufficient to prevent an individual or family in short-term financial crisis from becoming homeless due to a short-term financial emergency the grantee could not have anticipated or prepared for. Since 2002, MN donors have stopped the cycle of poverty for nearly 11,000 hard-working individuals and families that conventional philanthropy otherwise had forgotten, and the Modest Needs Groupon Grassroots Campaign will empower donors from across the country to stop the cycle of poverty for significantly more individuals and families than otherwise would be possible.

“We are excited to employ the collective action model of Groupon Grassroots to raise support for the hardworking individuals that—through no fault of their own—are having difficulty keeping a roof over their heads,” said Modest Needs Foundation President Dr. Keith Taylor. “With the beauty of crowd-funding, ordinary folks can do extraordinary things to positively affect another’s life with the simple click of a mouse. What’s more, each time we’re able to stop the cycle of poverty for a low-income worker, Modest Needs lessens the burden of state and federal programs charged with the care of the truly indigent.”
