New York, NY (PRWEB) October 02, 2012
In August, more than 16,000 jobs were advertised online for graphic designers in the United States, according to WANTED Analytics™ (http://www.wantedanalytics.com), the leading source of real-time business intelligence for the talent marketplace. Although agencies and design services companies have the most demand, hiring by other employers is growing as they may bring this talent internally to focus on branding efforts and make their products more recognizable. The number of job ads increased rapidly in 2012, surpassing pre-recession hiring volumes and reaching new highs in August.
Candidates are often required to have specialized skills, particularly when using design software and technologies. The most commonly required skills for graphic designers include:
1. Adobe Photoshop
2. Graphical User Interface Design (UI)
3. Adobe InDesign
4. Adobe Creative Suite
5. Website Development
7. Microsoft Office
8. Microsoft PowerPoint
9. Adobe Dreamweaver
10. Adobe Illustrator
Graphic designers are in-demand across the United States. The metropolitan areas with the highest volume of listings in August were New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Washington (DC). The New York area saw the most available positions; however, Chicago experienced the greatest growth in demand over the past year of these five areas. Here, the number of job ads that were available during August was up more than 70% compared to the same month last year.
As more employers focus on creative aspects of their brand, hiring demand for graphic designers is likely to continue. Currently, the supply of potential candidates with design experience creates moderate challenges for employers. According to the Hiring Scale™, employers across the United States spend an average of 5.2 weeks advertising jobs and sourcing candidates for graphic design positions. However, each location and region of the US will experience a varying degree of difficulty when recruiting. Companies in Seattle, Washington and San Francisco, California are currently experiencing some of the most challenging overall recruiting conditions. Competition has emerged as hiring in these areas is growing more quickly than the local talent supply can support. Job ads in this area remain online for an average of 6 weeks.
In comparison, the Hiring Scale also shows the locations experiencing the least difficulties recruiting this talent are Springfield, Massachusetts and Louisville, Kentucky. Larger talent supply compared to the hiring demand by employers in these metro areas means that recruiters are likely to fill open graphic design positions faster than average. The average duration of a job ad in these locations is 4 weeks, more than one week shorter than the national average.
The Hiring Scale measures conditions in local job markets by comparing hiring demand and labor supply. The Hiring Scale is part of the WANTED Analytics platform that offers business intelligence for the talent marketplace.
