Unity, Maine, played host to the Common Ground Country Fair this week, celebrating local farming and organic food. In response, Massage School San Diego, a proponent of raw organic foods and massage therapy schools in San Diego CA, has released a tip sheet, detailing how to get started in organic growing and farming.
Per the New York Times, the 36th annual Common Ground Country Fair took place this week at the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association in Unity, Maine. The fair, which celebrates local farming and organic food production in the area, attracted more than 59,000 visitors and brought in $300,000 in revenue. Funds from the fair will go toward farming workshops, training programs and operating expenses for the association.
In conjunction with the Common Ground Country Fair, Massage School San Diego has released a list of tips for getting started with organic gardening, in hopes of encouraging the production and consumption of these healthy foods.
- Research and plan ahead. Find out what plants will work best for your climate, soil and season, and plan out your crop rotation.
- Get your soil healthy. Check the PH, and use compost, hummus or organic fertilizer to enrich it.
- Plant your seeds. Be careful to note which need to be started indoors, and which can go directly into your outdoor plot.
- Fertilize. Use compost and organic fertilizer to keep your plants healthy.
- Stay away from pesticides, weed killers and other chemicals. Treat pest or weed problems organically.
Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association is an organization that promotes and supports the organic farming industry in the state of Maine. It was formed in 1971, making it the oldest group of its kind in the U.S.
Unity is a town located in Southern Maine. It was incorporated in 1804 and boasts a population of just under 2,000 people. It is a part of Waldo County and is home to Unity College, a private liberal arts university. The town was originally settled by the Quakers.
Maine is a state in the Northeast U.S. It is considered a part of the New England region and is located along the Atlantic Coast. Maine joined the Union in 1820 and has a population of 1.3 million, as of 2011. Its largest city is Portland.
