One of the ingenious features of CAN, the bit monitoring, contributes not only to the enormous reliability of Controller Area Network, but it is ironically also responsible for its biggest drawback, the limited physical distance of the CAN bus. Restricted physical distance can be an issue especially for applications that use the maximum baud rate of 1 Mbit/sec.
Until now, the one and only way to extend the usable bus length without compromising the reliability was to lower the baud rate. In cases where baud rate is not the main focus, e.g. diagnostics and low priority messaging, a CAN bus can be extended over great distances, but at the maximum baud rate the maximum network length is only roughly 150 feet.
The EtherCAN/2 interface by esd electronics supports a bridge mode that allows it to connect two CAN networks per TCP/IP and take advantage of the Ethernet speed and supported (virtually unlimited) distance.
Among many features, the EtherCAN/2 provides support for 11 or 29 Bit CAN IDs, acceptance filters to manage the amount of data being exchanged, and support of two CAN networks operating at different baud rates.
The EtherCAN/2 is an Ethernet-CAN-Gateway equipped with an ARM9 processor, which controls the data transfer between CAN and Ethernet.
The Ethernet interface is suitable for 10 Mbit/s and 100 Mbit/s networks and can be connected via an RJ45-socket.
The interface is in accordance with ISO 11898-2, is electrically isolated and can be used for transmission rates from 50 kbit/s up to 1 Mbit/s.
