Wiley's Employment Relations Today Journal features Human Resources technology article 'The Workplace Engagement Economy Where HR, Social, Mobile, and Tech Collide' authored by Jessica Miller-Merrell.

The article appears in Employment Relations Today Summer 2012, an HR industry-based journal published quarterly by Wiley's and made available by subscription.

In the article, Miller-Merrell, industry expert and owner of Xceptional HR and Blogging4Jobs, provides a balanced analysis on how embracing new technologies can advance business strategies, achieve maximum reach and positively influence fast-growing employee segments. People born between the 1980s through 2000s are characterized as the "Millenial Generation." This age group is among the fastest growing population in today's work environment and is projected to make up 75 percent of the workforce by 2025.

"HR professionals and business leaders must recognize [Millenials] as a significant segment of their audience for current and future employment branding campaigns and recruitment and employee engagement efforts," writes Miller-Merrell in the published article.

According to the article, a great way to meet these employees on a level field is through cell phone communication such as texting and other mobile platforms, making work communication as simple and productive as possible. Alerts can be sent about emergency announcements or even internal job openings.

In 2010, the Federal Telework Bill was passed, allowing for these federal government agencies to take advantage of telework and BYOD (bring your own device) programs. Employers offer incentive and a monthly stipend to those using their own device, as opposed to paying for a second phone and plan for each employee. This regulatory boost is one example of a strategic effort to keep employees engaged and connected to the company brand using new technologies, and it showcases how mobile connections are becoming mainstream.

"Development of company brands and relationships with customers and job seekers is a foundational piece of business anthropology," Miller-Merrell said. "Potential employees can engage the brand in a safe environment, learning about the organization prior to completing the online application."
