American Quilter’s Society Awards Over $44,000 in Des Moines, Iowa

The American Quilter’s Society has selected the winners of the 5th Annual AQS Quilt Show & Contest in Des Moines, Iowa. Winners come from 18 States and 1 Foreign Country and share over $44,000 in cash awards for their amazing textile artistry.

The AQS Quilt Show & Contest, opening October 3, 2012, features over 1,000 quilts from around the world. Among the 8 special exhibits are included two international collections, two from the National Quilt Museum, and other collections for four days only in Des Moines, Iowa.

The high point of the show recognizes the artistry of today’s quiltmakers, as over 180 quilters in the AQS Quilt Contest are competing for more than $44,000 in cash awards. Entries in this international contest and exhibition come from around the world, as well as 30 from Iowans. The winners of this year’s contest have just been selected.

This year’s winners come from across the country, each sharing a part of the $44,250 cash prizes. Quilts from 18 states have won awards at this year’s contest, and one winner comes from Canada. These 25 winning quilts will astound the 15,000 quilters expected to view the show from October 3-6, 2012.

Iowa is very well represented among the winners, with three winning quilts coming from the state. Native Iowa quilters sharing honors are: Leigh Lussie of Windsor Heights with AN ABUNDANCE OF FLOWERS; MISS EMILY’S GARDEN, by Carole J. Floyd of West Des Moines; Sue Kluber of Guernsey’s quilt, OLD SOLDIER. Also included in the winner’s list are three quilts from neighboring Illinois, as well as one each from nearby Wisconsin and Nebraska.

Libby Lehman, a judge in the contest, says, “The quilts in this show are very colorful and include a variety of techniques. Attendees will get to see some beautiful quilting in the contest quilts.”

A highlight of the winners of top honors are:
Best of Show Award: EUREKA!, Marilyn Badger, Saint George, UT
Best Hand Workmanship Award: SYMPHONY OF ROSES, Barbara Clem, Rockford, IL
Best Machine Workmanship Award: LETTER CARRIERS, Janet Stone, Overland Park, KS
Best Longarm Workmanship Award: SWAN’S SONG, Lisa H. Calle, Pottstown, PA
Best Wall Quilt Award: PEACE, LOVE, TIE-DYE, SAVE THE WHALES, Susan Carlson, Harpswell, ME

There’s still time to come see all the winners, as well as the over 1,000 quilts on display at the Iowa Events Center. Show admission to the AQS Quilt Show in Des Moines, Iowa, start at only $11. The show is open to the public, October 3rd through 6th, 2012. AQS member and multi-day discounts are available.
