“You may find that one network connection in the place you least expect it.”
Houston, TX (PRWEB) October 03, 2012
With the impending release of the jobs report from the Labor Department, unemployment remains a crucial issue in the minds of Americans especially in an election year. As part of the FastCompany.com Expert Perspective blog series, success strategist Dayna Steele writes that if someone is having a hard time finding a job, landing a client or even getting a date, it is because his or her network is missing that one crucial link.
“Pick up the phone. Write an email. IM a former co-worker. Get in touch with someone you haven’t talked to in a while,” says Steele in her latest blog post, 5 Ways to Grow Your Network Right This Very Minute. “It is great to catch up and you may find they are working on a project or with a colleague that piques your interest.”
From the knowledge learned in her early days as a rock radio personality in Houston, Steele understood the power of networking. It helped her to grow her brand both as a radio celebrity and later as an entrepreneur. Steele believes the bigger the network, the greater the opportunities. She suggests attending more events, utilizing social media and even volunteering for a non-profit organization. “The most important thing, however, is letting people know what it is you need,” adds Dayna. “You may find that one network connection in the place you least expect it.”
Steele cited a recent story about a friend who returned to Houston from his high school reunion with several resumes from his former classmates.
“These people weren’t afraid to ask for what they need and he brought the resumes back to his employer who was hiring," said Steele. "They are all in the interview process now for jobs both in their area and in Houston. It’s incredible the progress you can make if you only ask.”
