Men have been asking us for HPV testing for years," Says Gage. "We feel it is important for us to conduct our own male HPV DNA research to help shed more light on HPV in men.

Progressive Health Services is now providing a new HPV test for men in San Diego as part of a research study. The test, an HPV DNA test which looks for HPV of the penis, is being offered in the context of a research study to help identify HPV in men. HPV, also called Human Papilloma Virus, genital warts and venereal warts, is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. today. High risk strains of HPV are known to cause male cancers of the penis, throat and anus, as well as cancer of the female cervix. More men are becoming aware of the risks of HPV and are seeking testing.

Progressive Health Services, who has been providing comprehensive STD testing and treatment for men and women for over 35 years, cites previously published research studies demonstrating that HPV can, indeed, be identified via DNA testing from the urethral opening of the penis. The test is done by gently collecting cells from secretions in the very opening of the penis using a special tiny soft swab. Progressive Health Services is collaborating with Danner Laboratory, also located in San Diego, on the study.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. today. The Center for Disease Control estimates that about 20 million Americans are infected with HPV. The CDC believes that at least 50% of men and women become infected with HPV through sexual contact at some point in their lives. While it has long been known that high-risk strains of HPV can increase the risk for cervical cancer in women, research is now showing that these same high-risk strains of HPV can also increase the risk for cancers of the penis, anus, rectum and throat.

Progressive Health Services clinical director Suzann Gage, OB/GYN nurse practitioner and licensed acupuncturist, notes that research linking HPV to cervical cancer prompted FDA approval for HPV DNA testing in women via Pap smears. “Men have been asking us for HPV testing for years. We feel it is important for us to conduct our own male HPV DNA research to help shed more light on HPV in men.”

Progressive Health Services currently provides FDA approved HPV DNA testing of the throat, anus and cervix, as well as HPV DNA testing of the penis as research, at their offices in San Diego, California. HPV DNA tests can look for high-risk cancer causing strains of HPV as well as the most common low risk strains of HPV not associated with cancers. Both high and low risk strains of HPV are contagious and can be sexually transmitted.

In addition to HPV testing, Progressive Health Services offers a variety of treatments for HPV including conventional treatments as well as alternative health care options.
