Don Lerch’s new book “Coon Hunting in Schuyler County, Illinois” (published by iUniverse) offers readers a revealing look into what life is like for a hunter by sharing stories from Lerch’s past, as well as stories from his hunter friends.
In “Coon Hunting in Schuyler County, Illinois” Lerch looks back on his life in his hometown – a life filled with memories of hunting raccoons. He recalls stories ranging all the way back to his childhood when he first started hunting with other raccoon hunters and using coonhounds. For Lerch and many other hunters whose stories he shares in “Coon Hunting in Schuyler County, Illinois,” hunting and selling furs was a way of life and a means for their families to survive.
An excerpt from “Coon Hunting in Schuyler County, Illinois”:
A lot of nights after a hunt we would agree that we should rest the next night, but when the sun started to go down, I would start thinking about hunting and I would be calling someone or they would be calling me. We would be making plans about where we would go, and pretty soon one would be picking up the other and we would be hunting another night. You didn’t have to be crazy but it helped.
Lerch hopes readers enjoy reading about the love of raccoon hunting that he and his friends share, but he also hopes they find his glimpse into the simple life he lived in Schuyler County interesting. “It is true stories from people who loved the sport of coon hunting,” says Lerch. “It brings back fond memories of hard but simpler times.”
