Aberdeen has weathered the financial storm remarkably well and the growing number of new company formations is a positive sign for future growth in the city.

Aberdeen: Company formation numbers in Aberdeen have risen during the first six months of the year, according to data in the latest Duport Business Confidence Report. There were 1042 companies formed between January and June, representing a 6% increase on the same period in 2011. Known as the “Oil Capital of Europe”, Aberdeen has been one of the few cities to grow its economy during the financial crisis. However, the city is actively looking to change its economic focus to renewable energy. The local authority have in place a Renewable Energy Strategy which requires 20% of all electricity to be produced from renewable energy resources by 2020. In recent years, many renewable energy companies have sprung up in the area, hoping to capitalise on the shift in energy production.
As well as being an important hub for the energy industry, Aberdeen is one of the most popular shopping destinations in Scotland. In addition to its traditional shopping streets, the city also boasts a new retail and leisure development, Union Square, which hosts a cinema and several restaurants, together with a wide range of shops.
