Seniors and technology are two images that don’t always go hand in hand. But older Atlanta residents are now visiting The Holbrook of Lake Lanier and Dogwood Forest Alpharetta, senior living communities for tutoring in the use of computers and the internet. Community staff say they’ve taken to it with zeal.

The tutoring is done in small-group classes, providing a setting where seniors feel comfortable asking questions and can move at their own pace. The first class at The Holbrook was held in September and had nine participants, all of whom said they enjoyed the class and intend to continue at future sessions.

“It’s a benefit from many angles,” said Sandy Diekroeger, Life Enrichment Director for The Holbrook. “The residents can stay in touch better with family and friends, and it benefits the community because it’s an easy way for the seniors to increase their knowledge of the internet and what it offers.”

Diekroeger said that one of the most difficult aspects of senior life can be a sense of loneliness, which is something The Holbrook fights through community social events, recreational activities, and now technology.

A recent report by the University of Adelaide seems to echo Diekroeger’s thoughts. The report, published in September, found that up to a third of senior citizens in Australia were open to learning new technologies, and can use them to overcome distance and mobility limitations to stay connected to their family or community.

The classes at The Holbrook came about as a collaboration with a senior-focused nonprofit, BlueHair Technology, that works across Georgia to help seniors make use of current technology. Classes are open to all seniors, including those who are not Holbrook residents, and cost $10 per class. The next class is scheduled for October 12.
