Viamede Resort (http://www.viamede.com), on beautiful Stoney Lake in the Kawarthas, hosted its second annual Charity Hog Roast to raise money for the Kawartha Heritage Conservancy last month. The annual event, held on the lawns in front of the resort, attracted a crowd of locals, keen to support the KHC as well as people from all over to experience Viamede’s culinary treats.
The hogs, which are raised on site, are purebred Tamworth pigs, an at-risk heritage breed. They are raised on vegetable scraps and grains, with over an acre of land to roam. Viamede’s owner, Ben Sämann, insists that this is gives the best flavour. “A happy pig is best for everyone. Their diet and exercise make for a great marbling you don’t find in grocery store pork.”
The Kawartha Heritage Conservancy is well known regionally as a land trust, and has in recent years experienced substantial growth. Currently, the KHC protects 1700 acres of land through stewardship and trust holdings, much of which is on Stoney Lake itself. The money raised will go towards protecting more land, including easements and paying auxillary costs around land donations.
The conservancy will also be working with Viamede in the coming years to expand Viamede’s trail network onto KHC land, making the trails publically accessible. This trail would be one of the longest private trail networks in the Kawarthas.
