Wright & McGurk is warning dialysis patients that they could be at risk for potentially fatal injuries as a result of dialysis treament. Patients who received dialysis treatments using Fresenious Medical Care’s (FMC) products GranuFlo or NaturaLyte could be at serious risk for heart attack or death. The FDA has issued a Class I recall of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte after over 900 initial cases of heart attacks during dialysis treatment. A Class I recall is the FDA’s most serious recall, issued only in cases with serious adverse health consequences, including death. http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/Safety/ListofRecalls/ucm309990.htm

Both GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are two extremely popular dialysis solutions used in roughly 1/3 of dialysis patients. Of the roughly 400,000 Americans who receive dialysis treatments every year, these solutions were among the most widely used to remove harmful toxins, excess fluids, salts, and reduce acid build up in the blood. However, in patients with raised bicarbonate levels, their mixture with other bicarbonates produced a toxic overdose.

FMC was aware of the potential for overdose and subsequent heart attack risk. Researchers operating in their internal network of dialysis care centers observed severe reactions during dialysis and noted them in an internal memo. This internal memo, which was later leaked to the FDA, warned of “troubling findings” which they shared with doctors in their network. FMC did not share this information with an estimated 125,000 patients receiving care at non- FMC clinics. And they did not make these customers aware of these risks until their internal memo was leaked to the FDA. As a result, potentially thousands of patients were at risk for severe health consequences.

Said attorney Andrew Wright, "No patient should have to endure pain and suffering as a result of their treatments. We'd like to help these injured dialysis patients and their families."
