We had been talking about doing a screening program and because kidney disease is an integral part of our business, this was the perfect place to start.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) October 04, 2012
Pentec Health, a developer of proprietary nutritional therapies for patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD), recently participated in an early evaluation kidney screening program designed to raise awareness about CKD. The program was launched as part of the company’s Best Places to Work initiative, for which Pentec won an award in 2011. More than half the employees at Pentec Health’s suburban Philadelphia office took advantage of the free health screening. The program was delivered in partnership with Kidney TRUST, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the progression of CKD and providing financial assistance to those affected by CKD.
Pentec offers onsite programs, such as educational fairs and medical screening programs, to help employees take charge of their own health and improve their work-life balance, stated Becky Helfter, HR Training & Instructional Design Specialist. “We already have a flu shot program and one of our nurses is available to perform blood pressure checks.” Helfter continues, “We had been talking about doing a screening program and because kidney disease is an integral part of our business, this was the perfect place to start.”
According to the Kidney TRUST, 31 million American adults have CKD. Ninety percent of those are unaware of their disease because CKD is a silent epidemic with little or no symptoms until the kidneys begin to fail. Those with CKD are at risk for heart attack, stroke, anemia and bone disease. If caught early, CKD is treatable.
First, employee participants completed a health risk appraisal; then, a small sample of blood was drawn by a professional phlebotomist. The samples were analyzed onsite by a trained educator and the confidential results were discussed with the employee. “The process was very smooth and well thought out. You don’t have to leave your place of employment and there’s no co-pay. It’s a win win,” said Kelly Robinson-Taylor, Patient Financial Advocate at Pentec Health. “I have been personally affected by CKD as I have a few family members who have been diagnosed with renal disease, so I realize the importance of early testing. I believe in being proactive whenever possible and greatly appreciate my company for organizing this event.”
