Asserting that claims of 1.5 million self-defense gun uses annually in the U.S. are grossly incorrect, a registered user of TruthMarket, the site that enables grassroots, crowd-funding of challenges to political and commercial misinformation, is crowd-funding a $30,000 bounty for proof

Simple arithmetic converts that to an average of over 4,000 cases of self-defense gun use daily.

TruthMarket, a division of Truth Seal Corp., today announced that Mike Bailey, a private citizen in Pacific Grove, California, is using the platform to dispute claims that guns are used 1.5 million times annually by U.S. residents for self-defense. If Bailey is able to crowd fund $35,833 from other citizens who want gun decisions based on fact, he will be able to launch a campaign to challenge the claims of groups like Gun Owners of America who cite these statistics. The first person who can deliver verifiable proof that 1.5 million figure is correct would win the $30,000 bounty.

Stating that, “the 1.5 million figure is grossly incorrect,” Bailey says that “simple arithmetic converts that to an average of over 4,000 cases of self-defense gun use daily. Any reasonable person would have to conclude that this is overblown and indicative of a poorly hidden agenda to influence gun ownership laws in the U.S.” Bailey further points out that, “Gun Owners of America, GOA, pull the 1.5 million figure from a 1997 National Institute of Justice report that seems to imply guns are needed or self-protection. This probably sways some voters against any new gun legislation.” The statistic, however, is false and has been labeled as such by the authors of the study. Bailey’s motivation is straightforward. “I want gun decisions to be made based on fact.”

To win the $30,000 bounty, a campaign challenger will have to provide verifiable evidence that the 1.5 million number is correct or too low.
