New Report Highlights Insecure WiFi Hotspots as Top Concern Among Internet Security Professionals, as Mobility in Computing Becomes More Prevalent

Industry organization Cloud Security Alliance reveals that experts see insecure WiFi as among the top threats to their organizations’ security.


There’s no stronger indication of a threat’s true severity than its ranking by actual experts in the field

The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA), a leading industry organization comprised of security industry practitioners, corporations and associations, shared its first-annual “Top Threats to Mobile Computing” report today, which includes the results of a survey issued to more than 200 enterprise Internet security professionals around the world. Among the threats ranking highest in the survey: Insecure public WiFi hotspots and rogue access points.

As we move further into an era where mobility in computing is ubiquitous, Internet users are relying on public WiFi hotspots with a rapidly increasing regularity. Unfortunately, it’s often at public WiFi hotspots that nefarious activities such as spying, spoofing and man-in-the-middle attacks occur. Industry practitioners and their organization’s security becomes affected when malware infections occur during connection to public WiFi hotspots, and the device subsequently connects to the organization’s network, introducing the malware infection to the organization. Further, the organization’s security is compromised should and proprietary data be leaked to an unauthorized source during connection to an insecure or rogue WiFi hotspot.

A startling 81% of the survey’s 210 respondents, which represent 210 CSA member organizations from 26 countries globally, believe that insecure and rogue WiFi access points are already happening today.

The fact that insecure WiFi hotspots ranks so high on the list of experts’ top concerns comes as no surprise to main report contributor OpenDNS CTO Dan Hubbard, as OpenDNS provides services that easily secure both WiFi hotspots for their operators, but also for the devices that connect to them. Other threats ranking high in the report include, but are not limited to, data loss from lost or stolen devices, mobile malware, Near-Field Communications (NFC) and location-based hacking.
