Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 09, 2012

Fitness Ridge Worldwide, LLC, the owner and operator of the award-winning The Biggest Loser Resort, announced today its four guiding tips to fight diabetes as recommended by its nutrition and fitness team, as well as its support of the American Diabetes Association movement to Stop Diabetes®. During American Diabetes Month® this November, a $200 donation will be made to the American Diabetes Association for each guest who stays at any of the three Biggest Loser Resorts at a non-discounted rate.

The Biggest Loser Resort’s four guiding tips are:

1.) Create and maintain a balanced & consistent eating pattern: Eating on a schedule or having a routine pattern is MOST important. An example of a great routine includes having 3 balanced and healthy meals plus 1-2 snacks each day. It is ideal to include a balance of carbohydrates, fats and proteins at every meal.

2.) Portion control is key: But, how much is “a portion,” you ask? Here are a few guiding principles to help you out:

     • 1 tbsp = Your thumb tip
     • ½ cup = 2 golf balls
     • 2/3 cup = 1 tennis ball
     • 1 cup = 1 baseball
     • 3 oz = a deck of cards
     • 6 oz = a checkbook

3.) Exercise regularly: Be creative with your workouts – try hiking, taking a new fitness class, watching a DVD, playing tennis, going swimming – just explore your options and find activities you like!

4.) Set aside time for quality sleep: Too little sleep or poor quality sleep disrupts hormones and can lead to higher blood glucose, a thicker waistline and an increased appetite.

The Biggest Loser Resort, now operating in Ivins, UT, Malibu, CA, and Niagara Falls/Buffalo, NY, offers guests a unique weight-loss and wellness experience designed by an integrative team of certified trainers, nutritionists, executive chefs, and other wellness professionals. Founded on a five-point philosophy of fitness, nutrition, education, relaxation, and community support, guests at The Biggest Loser Resort enjoy a nutritionally balanced, boot-camp style experience that focuses exclusively on improving the direction of each guest’s life. The Biggest Loser Resort is licensed through the NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products Group and Shine America.

“With the incidence of type 2 diabetes linked to obesity growing at epidemic rates, we decided to stand up and be part of the solution,” said Larry Bond, CEO of Fitness Ridge. “Unfortunately, diabetes is well known to us as some of our guests and show contestants have either prediabetes or type 2 diabetes,” he added.

“While on The Biggest Loser TV show, the doctor told me I had type 2 diabetes. It was one of the most heart wrenching days of my life”, said Ramon Medeiros, a finalist on Season 12 of the show, and a trainer at The Biggest Loser Resort-Niagara. “By the end of the show, my diabetes was under control because of my focus on diet and exercise. That was one of the best days of my life!”

“The good news is that the wellness experience we offer at The Biggest Loser Resort has helped a lot of people learn how they can properly manage their disease through proper nutrition and exercise. We are excited about teaming up with the American Diabetes Association to continue to help educate Biggest Loser fans, our guests and their family, friends and neighbors,” Bond added.

“We are so proud to work with The Biggest Loser Resort to provide such extensive health and fitness education and to make The Biggest Loser lifestyle more accessible,” said Kim Niemi, Senior Vice President, NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products Group. “Through improving diet and exercise habits with the techniques that are taught on the show, we hope to help reduce the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in America today.”

As part of the relationship, The Biggest Loser Resort shall become a Champion Sponsor of American Diabetes Month, and an official Supporter of the Stop Diabetes® campaign.

“Seventy-nine million, or one in three American adults, have prediabetes, which puts them at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is called a ‘silent killer’ because a quarter of those with the disease, or 7 million, do not know they have it. The Biggest Loser Resort offers a unique opportunity to raise critical awareness about diabetes and we look forward to working together,” said Geralyn Spollett, MSN, ANP-CS. CDE, President, Health Care & Education, American Diabetes Association.
