Electronic cigarette specialists, Nicolites, have responded to news of a new study suggesting smoking bans may help curb problem drinking.

Electronic cigarettes provide a less harmful alternative to smoking, and as they don’t contain tobacco, are exempt from the nation’s smoking ban.

The study, conducted by researchers at Yale University, looked at data from the National Epidemiological survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, comparing the behaviour of “problem drinkers” in states with smoking bans to those without. Through analysing personal interviews between the same group of subjects in the period between 2001 and 2002 then again between 2004 and 2005, it was discovered that in states which introduced smoking bans, 61% of problem drinkers showed signs of improvement from one interview period to the next. These findings have led the study’s senior author, Sherry McKee, to conclude that tobacco smokers were three times more likely to abuse alcohol or meet criteria for alcohol dependence, than non-smokers.

This view is supported by Pamela Mautte, Director of the Greater Valley Substance Abuse Action Council of BH Care in Ansonia, who claims that by nature, smokers follow a pattern of habit, and that in the same way some smokers may have a cigarette with their coffee, others may follow the same pattern with alcohol.

The team at Nicolites regularly undertake their own research into the industry, and were eager to look into the experiment further.

“We’ve all been educated on the harmful effects of tobacco smoking itself, however, it is interesting to consider that the habit may actually be connected to other harmful behaviour, such as drinking. Many smokers do claim to give in to the temptation of alcohol when they’ve had a cigarette and vice versa, so it’s encouraging to see that smoking bans may be beginning to break this cycle”, explains Managing Director, Nikhil Nathwani.

Rechargeable and disposable electronic cigarettes provide a less harmful alternative to smoking, and as they don’t contain tobacco, are exempt from the nation’s smoking ban.
Nicolites is now the leading and most widely available brand of electric cigarette in the UK; they have formed business partnerships with many of the largest retailers to bring these wonderful innovations right on to the doorstep of every person in the country. Established in late 2007, Nicolites has grown into a multi-million pound company with international distribution networks and continues to grow at a phenomenal rate.
