At present, the natural gas production in Japan does not keep up with the consumption. Following the March 2011 earthquake, the country’s demand for LNG has increased dramatically. The LNG import rose by over 10% last year and by monthly average of more than 15% from April 2011 till February 2012. The consumption of LNG in electric utilities grew by 20% to over 2 billion cubic feet during 2011. Currently, LNG imports come primarily from Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, Qatar and Russia.

Natural gas in Japan is mainly produced by the companies such as International Petroleum Exploration Corporation (INPEX), JAPEX, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, and Nippon Oil. Other Japanese oil & gas companies are actively involved in domestic and international natural gas exploration and production.
