The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England, and the Associated Teachers of Mathematics in Connecticut will host a regional conference and exposition in Hartford, October 24–26. The conference invites educators to learn effective teaching strategies and listen to exciting speakers who will inspire them to become better teachers.
Presenters during the conference will come from all across the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions, including New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Other presentations will be given by educators from surrounding states and throughout the United States, and from as far away as Brisbane, Australia. The conference will offer more than 250 sessions and workshops, covering all levels, pre-K–grade 12.
Keynote speaker Jeremy Bailenson, founding director of Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab and author of Infinite Reality, will explore how virtual reality transforms curricula, assessment, and the very nature of teacher-student relationships. He will present the Opening Session, “The Virtual Revolution of Teaching and Learning,” on Wednesday, October 24, 5:30 p.m.–7:00 p.m., at the Connecticut Convention Center, Ballroom C.
On Thursday and Friday, October 25 and 26, an interactive workshop will offer tips for all new and preservice teachers on how to manage their classrooms, work with parents, and handle homework. The sessions will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Thursday’s program will also feature a highlight unique to this regional conference—the 25th annual Richard Balomenos Memorial Lecture, honoring one of New England’s most dedicated mathematics educators. Charlene Tate Nichols of the Connecticut State Department of Education will examine Balomenos’s approach to mathematics education—including a strong and possibly controversial point of view that will spark attendees to think carefully about the improvement of mathematics education. This event will take place 3:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. at the Hartford Marriott Hotel, Ballroom B.
On Friday, October 26, NCTM President Linda Gojak will present “Cutting to the Core with the Standards for Mathematical Practice,” in which she will discuss rich mathematical tasks that encourage the development of the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice identified in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. This session is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. to noon in Meeting Room 17 of the Convention Center.
All conference activities will be held at the Connecticut Convention Center and the Hartford Marriott Hotel. In addition, hundreds of the latest education products will be on display in the Exhibit Hall of the Convention Center on Thursday, October 25, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and Friday, October 26, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a public voice of mathematics education, providing vision, leadership, and professional development to support teachers in ensuring mathematics learning of the highest quality for all students.
