Dr. Catrise Austin is a well-known dentist in Hollywood and New York. She has celebrity clients, authored a book, and is a renowned speaker. But, how does one verify Ms. Austin is really who she claims to be? This question is relevant in the current dental industry because of a recent incident in New Jersey. According to the New Jersey Herald, a man named Roben Brookhim has been charged with unlicensed practice of dentistry, identity theft and heath care claims fraud.

“I want people to be educated about all aspects of their dental experience. This includes verifying your dentist’s identity and credentials,” said Catrise L. Austin, D.D.S. “Some people feel really uncomfortable asking a dentist, or any medical professional, questions about his or her history. They’re afraid we take it as an insult. I want people to know it is OK to ask questions, which is why I am providing these free tips.”

Dr. Austin’s first tip is to always verify education. “Check out the dentist online. Visit his or her website and see if an education institution is listed. Next, contact the dental school's registrar and verify that the dentist completed the claimed course of study. Sometimes a photo is included with the school verification, which could have avoided a lot of problems for patients in the Brookhim case.”

Dr. Catrise Austin also suggest that people verify state licenses with local agencies. “In the Brookhim case, a deceased dentist’s license was used. It really is an extraordinary set of circumstances. I always suggest people take the time to verify a dentist’s license with local agencies. A five minute phone call can avoid a world of trouble or set one’s mind at ease!”
