Enjoying the great outdoors and becoming familiar with the world around you is an important part of childhood. But changes in the way that people live and fears over the safety of our children in a fast-paced, modern world mean that many children are unable to experience the joys of al fresco playtime. The infographic, created by the Accident Claims division of Osbornes Solicitors LLP, takes a look at what can be done to encourage safe outdoor play. It can be viewed here.
Recent research by Play England shows that many of today’s children are missing out on everyday childhood experiences because they don’t have the same opportunities to play outside as their parents did when they were younger. For example, one third of modern children have never created a den, 1 in 10 has never ridden a bike, and 59% wish they could play outside in natural spaces more often*.
The infographic shines a light on the play behaviour of today's children and takes a look at what can be done to encourage safe outdoor play in a world where busy roads and stranger danger can pose a very real risk. As well as startling statistics on the way children play today, the infographic also provides useful advice on keeping kids safe during outdoor play, such as how to set up a secure playground in your back garden, the importance of teaching road safety, and what to do if they suffer a fall.
Play is not only important for developing key skills and making friends, but also for the overall health and happiness of children. Earlier this year, the Government awarded £2 million to the Play England Free Time Consortium to help make neighbourhoods places where children are able to play outside more often, a move which Osbornes Solicitors LLP fully supports.
