Reading comprehension and phonics can be a difficult concept for students who are special needs learners. As a special education teacher for seventeen years, author Nicole Robinson understands their difficulty with organizing their thoughts in order to understand and recall details from stories read to them or stories that they have read on their own. In Welcome to a World Of Learning, she shares a special workbook that will help these learners become good readers.

Students at a young age need to know that letters put together, form words. The author has learned that the most effective way to teach young students the concept of words is by teaching them their names and she incorporates this in her book. Welcome to a World Of Learning consists of activities that Robinson has developed and introduced to students. The activities include figurative language, grammar, prefix and suffix, antonyms, synonyms, and homophones, conflict and resolution, characterization, sight words, writing prompts, and phonics skills by decoding words. Each unit has activities that are designed to effectively teach and improve students’ phonics skills and language arts skills.

Teachers need to work on building special needs learners’ self-esteem while teaching reading. Good instruction is needed in teaching these learners’ how to comprehend reading materials. It is important that these students are not viewed as having an inability to learn how to read, but rather, they learn through different methods and strategies. Designed for special education teachers, the lessons and activities in Welcome to a World Of Learning can be used as a supplementary tool to enhance these students’ reading comprehension, phonics and vocabulary skills. It will help teachers in meeting the academic needs of their learners.
