English is becoming the global language of education. The pressure to learn English is intense: scholars face pressure to publish in English to reach the widest possible audience, universities are competing to attract the best international students and faculty; and students want to study an English language degree to be competitive in a globalized, English friendly job market.
Universities with global ambitions have no choice but to adopt English as the language of tuition. Italy’s leading university, for example, recently announced that it is switching all its degree courses to English rather than Italian. The globalization of English was the trigger.
"We strongly believe our classes should be international classes - and the only way to have international classes is to use the English language," says Politecnico di Milano’s rector, Giovanni Azzone. "Universities are in a more competitive world, if you want to stay with the other global universities - you have no other choice".
English is already the language of business, media, entertainment and computers, and is the functional language for innumerous things, from air traffic control to global jihad.
However, the rise of English as the global language of education presents unique problems for students and academics. A common fear is that non-native English speakers will be disadvantaged compared to native ones. Another is that the quality of work will suffer if academics and students are forced to use a second language.
One practical solution to these fears is English editing. An editor receives an essay, thesis or paper by email, and makes corrections for style, expression, word selection, sentence structure and of course spelling and grammar.
