Ernst & Young LLP Announces Newest Tax Hires

Tax practice adds partners, principals and executive directors across US

Ernst & Young LLP today announced that David Damron, Marc Detampel, Bobby Stover, Jennifer Williams and Michelle Zahler have joined the firm as partners, along with Wes Cornwell and Matthew Stevens as principals and John Hauser, Jane Malecki and Russell Sanders as executive directors.

David Damron joins Ernst & Young LLP’s Business Tax Services practice in Phoenix, where he will focus on supporting middle market public and privately held companies. Formerly of Grant Thornton LLP, Damron has extensive experience in multinational and multistate corporate income tax and partnership income tax. He also has significant experience in income tax accounting and has been involved in the development of tax compliance processes and tools.

Returning to the firm, Marc Detampel will lead the Midwest Human Resources (HR) Performance Improvement practice in Chicago. He began his career with Ernst & Young LLP, focusing on change management, organizational design and HR consulting. Most recently at Accenture, Detampel focuses on human capital and organizational effectiveness, learning and collaboration and change management for large, multinational clients.    

Bobby Stover joins Ernst & Young LLP as the Southwest subarea leader of the firm’s Private Financial Services practice, based in Dallas. Formerly with Grant Thornton, he brings more than 18 years of experience assisting dynamic family owned businesses, their owners and family members grow and preserve their wealth while dealing with the complex issues of business succession, governance, income and transfer tax. Stover has been an instructor and speaker at seminars on various business succession and wealth transfer topics throughout the country and will again be a speaker at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Advanced Personal Financial Planning Conference in January 2013.

Jennifer Williams joins Ernst & Young LLP from the Shanghai office of the Ernst & Young member firm in China, where she served as the Tax Account Leader (TAL) for certain Asian and US companies. Now located in Miami, Williams will serve as a TAL in Ernst & Young LLP’s International Tax Services (ITS) practice. Working in Asia Pacific since 2004, she has had a number of roles at Ernst & Young, including working on the US/ITS Tax Desk in Shanghai, building a local ITS core practice in Taiwan, and serving as an ITS subject matter specialist in Chinese taxation. She has previously worked in Ernst & Young LLP’s Atlanta and Orlando offices, as well.

In Chicago, the Financial Services Office adds Michelle Zahler as a partner in Indirect Tax Services. Formerly of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Zahler has more than 26 years of tax experience and boasts extensive skills in the state and local taxation of financial services companies. Zahler will be leading the Financial Services Indirect tax practice in Chicago as well as the banking and capital markets sector on a national basis.

Wes Cornwell rejoins the International Tax Services - Transfer Pricing practice as a principal in Chicago, where he began his career as a transfer pricing and business analyst. Cornwell comes from Ceteris, a consulting firm where he was a managing director and co-leader of the Chicago office. He played a leadership role in growing the company from approximately 10 to 60 professionals and earning it recognition as one of Inc. magazine’s 500|5,000 fastest growing private companies in America for four consecutive years. His deep global knowledge and experience with complex transfer pricing planning and controversy matters will bring immediate value to Ernst & Young LLP’s large multinational clients and engagement teams.

Matthew Stevens joins the International Tax Services Capital Markets Group as a principal in Washington, DC. As the group continues to expand and capitalize on client opportunities, his addition represents a major asset for the practice and firm. Stevens served most recently as a partner in the Federal and International Tax Group of Alston & Bird, LLP, where he was responsible for advising commercial banks, hedge funds, high net-worth individuals and multinational corporations. Prior to that, Stevens was counsel at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, where he handled both planning and controversy matters involving the US federal income tax consequences of transactions. From 2002 to 2004, he served as special counsel to the Chief Counsel for the IRS, providing advice on a wide array of regulatory matters. Additional previous experience includes positions at Arnold & Porter and the US Tax Court.

The San Jose, CA office adds John Hauser as an executive director in Business Tax Services, where he will serve as a Tax Account Leader. Joining from PricewaterhouseCoopers, he brings 17 years of experience providing tax and business advice in a number of industries, including software, online and mobile media, entertainment, semiconductor, and consumer retail.

Jane Malecki joins Ernst & Young LLP’s Global Mobility practice as an executive director in Metro Park, NJ. Malecki has more than 30 years of experience in global mobility. For the last 10 years, she was a senior vice president at Weichert Relocation Resources, Inc., developing their international assignment service offering. She brings this vast experience along with strong technical and engagement management skills. Malecki is the leader of Ernst & Young LLP's Global Mobility Policy Advisory service offering helping clients address program design, performance improvement and policy alignment with strategic goals and development.

Personal Financial Services in McLean, VA, welcomes Russell Sanders as an executive director. He joins from The Ayco Company (a Goldman Sachs company) where, as a wealth strategist, he provided clients an overview of estate planning, insurance needs, cash flow and wealth transfer objectives. Sanders looks forward to fostering deep relationships to provide the most impact for the firm’s personal financial services clients.
