The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has increased the number affected by the recent meningitis outbreak to 119 cases and 11 deaths. A steroid injection commonly used to relieve back pain using the drug methylprednisolone acetate has been linked to outbreaks in Tennessee, Michigan, Virginia, Indiana, Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio and now New Jersey.
The steroid was produced by a specialty pharmacy called the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts which has recalled a total of 17,676 single-dose vials. But unfortunately health officials have recently confirmed the outbreak has grown reaching the 10th state of New Jersey. Both federal and local health officials have been scrambling to notify anyone who might have been injected with the tainted drugs.
When a patient receives a steroid shot for back pain they have a personal and legal expectation to receive drugs from the clinic and manufacturer that are safe. Instead of patients receiving proper treatment they are asking themselves is viral meningitis contagious, what is the treatment for viral meningitis, and is meningitis in children deadly?
Once meningitis symptoms appear patients will need both medical and legal help. The law firm at Douglas & London has years of experience helping clients who have been hurt, or worse, through pharmaceutical litigation and medical malpractice suits. We hold responsible parties accountable while securing our clients the protection they need while healing from their injuries.
