It’s difficult enough to learn that you or a loved one has an urgent mental health issue. The discovery that treatment lies out of town complicates an already challenging time for patients and families. But Mary Washington Healthcare's newly-expanded Snowden at Fredericksburg now can serve more patients close to home.

A just-completed expansion permits greater utilization of all 40 licensed beds at Snowden at Fredericksburg, allowing one of Virginia’s few community mental health hospitals to better accommodate its region’s demand for in-patient care for all ages, particularly adolescents.

“There’s been a reduction of beds across the state, and Snowden at Fredericksburg, as a private, nonprofit facility, has stepped up to serve even more people in our community,” says Mark Howard, Director of Operations at Snowden at Fredericksburg. “The new makeup of our units now allows use of 100 percent of our beds by enabling us to place and serve our patients not only based on their age and gender, but also based on diagnostic presentation.”

The expansion also refurbished space for Snowden’s array of outpatient programs for adults and adolescents. The project culminates months of planning based on strict clinical criteria. Located on the Mary Washington Hospital campus, Snowden provides a safe, secure, comfortable and caring environment for patients to receive mental health and substance abuse treatment.

“Our experienced team of highly trained psychiatrists, therapists, nurses and other professionals provides a whole continuum of care here,” Howard says. “Watching people move from crisis back to a place of hope is very rewarding. We recognize that our role is to help our patients find what’s already inside of them, to help them find their resiliency and recapture their hope.”

“Snowden's expansion means that Snowden will be even better able to provide the community with excellent psychiatric care,” said Dr. Shana A. Berger, MD, Adult Psychiatrist. “We are committed to providing patients personalized care that will better fit their needs.”
