Apple released iOS 6 recently, and the reviews have been all over the map. The new operating system is either akin to the Second Coming, or not worth the free download, depending upon who is reviewing it. The reviews seem to be along “party lines” and Apple fans are very happy with it, while fans of other mobile operating systems see it as derivative and inferior to their favourite platforms. Reviews are running the gamut from “Refining the world’s most refined mobile OS” to “iOS 6 Fail?”
Those with a positive outlook find a lot to like about it. The iOS 6 upgrade is free, and offers over 200 new features to their users. Many of the newer features have once again taken advantage of Apple’s superior graphics to produce visuals described as “stunning” by one reviewer.
Those who don’t like iOS 6 point out that many of the new features have already been available on other devices for up to two years. They also aren’t fans of Apple’s Maps feature, which replaced the popular and familiar Google Maps. In addition, many of the apps don’t work on all of the devices.
Apple’s website lists many of the features. They include Maps, which offers overhead views that zoom, tilt, and rotate, visual or spoken turn-by-turn navigation, and traffic updates in real-time. In addition, Apple has updated their iconic voice recognition program Siri to “speak” in more languages and work in more countries.
Apple has also integrated Facebook into iOS 6, allowing users to post photos from their iPhones, and have tweaked the program to allow users to interface Facebook by giving orders to Siri. The iOS 6 also allows users to use a share button which sends photos to select users through iCloud, iOS 6, or any Mac running Mountain Lion.
Many users who like iOS 6 are raving about the new app called Passbook. Passbook allows users to store virtual loyalty cards, retail coupons, movie or concert tickets, and boarding passes on their mobile devices. Another app called FaceTime, which allows users to make video calls, has been expanded to work over cellular networks.
