Health Insurance Marketplace Highlights Danger of Prescription Drugs

Infographic: The Deadly Truth about Prescription Drugs

People think that just because a drug is legalized with a prescription that it can’t kill.

Suffern, New York (PRWEB) November 12, 2012

VISTA Health Solutions released an infographic based on data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that shows the rising number of deaths caused by prescription deaths annually. According to the infographic, prescription painkillers kill more people annually than heroin and cocaine combined.

In addition the infographic depicts the top five deadliest prescription drugs that are responsible for the most deaths each year. Topping the list is opioid painkillers such as Oxycodone and Vicodin.

According to the Livestrong Foundation, one of the reasons opioid painkillers are so dangerous is because over time the the use of this drug actually increases sensitivity to pain which leads to a dangerous cycle of overuse.

The danger of prescription drug use was highlighted in a less traditional type of “infographic” painted recently by a group of Staten Island artists on the side of a building in Brighton, New York.

As told by SILive.com, the artists came together to create a mural on a 60 by 25 foot building to help raise awareness about the deadly effects of prescription drugs on today’s youth.

“People think that just because a drug is legalized with a prescription that it can’t kill,” said Simon Bukai President of VISTA Health Solutions. “This couldn’t be farther from the truth. As a health insurance marketplace based in New York we hope to help spread awareness about this issue.”
