Health studies have been warning for years about the negative effects of sugar. A recent study shows that the ill effects may be worse than originally thought. A study published in The Journal of Physiology concludes that sugar actually impairs cognitive function. The research study examined the effects of fructose (a type of sugar) on a group of lab rats. After being trained to navigate a maze, the sugar rats were fed a steady diet of fructose for 6 weeks, after which they were retested on the same maze and failed miserably. Conclusion: sugar directly affects brain function, impeding memory and cognitive function.
Thankfully, the study also examined the effect of DHA (also known as Omega 3 fatty acids) on the brain. The study showed that the negative effects of sugar were negated by a diet containing DHA, leading the researchers to conclude the importance of eating foods with Omega 3, especially when sugar consumption is high.
“This latest study shows what parents and teachers have seen in the classroom for years: too much sugar impairs cognitive function,” says McKenzie who points to the love of convenience foods that are loaded with additional sugar. “That’s why we encourage parents to feed their kids a diet that includes foods rich in Omega 3 or give them Omega 3 supplements.”
