As RVers Head to Various Parts of Mexico to Spend Their Winter, IIG Offers Tips on How to Receive Needed Coverage Without Paying Unnecessary Costs

US physical damage coverage coupled with Mexico liability is cheaper and better.

It has come. The first real winter storm of the season has hit the Northwest quadrant of the US, bringing snow and rain to parts of Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming. Without question the cold front will push eastward bringing snow and cold temperatures to other areas of the US. With it, many join their avian counterparts, and head south. While some will take up winter residence north of the border, others will head south of the border into various parts of Mexico.

For those headed to Old Mexico, there are a ton of benefits: great food, great culture, lower cost of living, exciting retirement communities, and much more. For those heading to Mexico in their RV or travel trailer there is a necessary expense: motor home insurance. Unfortunately, many RVers headed to Mexico will pay expensive, but unnecessary costs when using Mexico Physical Damage Insurance for their RV.

Unnecessary? Derek Kartchner, Vice President of Business Development at International Insurance Group, Inc. (IIG) explains, “Insurance for RVs and Travel Trailers is a must in the US and Mexico. Traditionally, purchasing motor home insurance for both countries meant spending a lot on each policy. That is no longer the case.” According to Kartchner, there are a number of Specialty Motor Home Insurance companies that offer a Mexico Physical Damage endorsement that can be purchased and added to a US insurance policy for, in many cases, $10-$20 a year. “Not all carriers offer this coverage, but many specialty RV insurance carriers do. It’s what they specialize in,” Kartchner said. While a Mexico Liability insurance policy must be purchased to provide the total package, a six month policy with $300,000 in liability coverage can be purchased for just $165.00.

The total package can be hundreds of dollars cheaper than a separate Mexico Insurance policy with Physical Damage coverage for the RV. Jim Labelle, President of IIG stated, “In addition to the savings, customers that purchase the physical damage piece from a US Motor Home Insurance carrier are getting significantly better coverage than what they would get from a Mexican carrier. It’s the reality of Mexico Insurance policies. US physical damage coverage coupled with Mexico liability is cheaper and better.”

The key to enjoying these savings and avoiding the unnecessary expense is to purchase from a specialist. There are many insurance agencies and companies across the country that offer Motor Home Insurance; unfortunately too many are auto insurance specialists shoehorning an RV into an auto insurance policy creating unneeded costs and short changing their customers on coverage.
